ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites)
ICOMOS is a global non-governmental organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of cultural heritage sites. Founded in 1965 in Warsaw, Poland, following the adoption of the Venice Charter (1964), ICOMOS works as an advisory body to UNESCO for implementing the World Heritage Convention. Its mission includes promoting the preservation, use, and enhancement of monuments, building complexes, and sites worldwide. ICOMOS develops doctrines, conducts advocacy, and provides technical evaluations for cultural World Heritage nominations. It also ensures the conservation status of listed properties. The organization has over 10,000 members in 153 countries, including architects, historians, archaeologists, and other heritage professionals.Additionally, ICOMOS collaborates with IUCN on projects like "Connecting Practice," which integrates natural and cultural heritage conservation approaches (ICOMOS, 2019). ICOMOS integrates climate action into cultural heritage conservation. Its Future of Our Pasts report (2019) outlines strategies to assess vulnerabilities and adapt conservation practices, emphasizing heritage’s role in climate resilience (ICOMOS, 2019).
