Global Goal on Adaptation
The Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) was established under Article 7 of the Paris Agreement to underscore the central role of adaptation in the global climate response. Its overarching objectives are to enhance adaptive capacity, strengthen resilience, and reduce vulnerability to climate change, thereby contributing to sustainable development and ensuring an adequate adaptation response in the context of the 1.5°C goal (UNFCCC, 2015).The GGA promotes locally led, context-specific adaptation solutions, recognizing the importance of equity, inclusion, and the integration of Indigenous and local knowledge. It is supported by emerging frameworks for assessing climate risk, tracking progress, and enhancing adaptation transparency through the Global Stocktake and adaptation communications (UNFCCC, 2022; IPCC, 2023). While still evolving, the GGA is intended to guide coherent and measurable global action on adaptation in alignment with national priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
